Do you set of theft alarms entering and leaving stores ?
For a couple of weeks, I was having this peculiar problem, every time I would enter a store the theft alarm would beep and every time I would leave it would beep. Thank God Redmond is such a friendly place that no one ever stopped or questioned me, but random passerbys did give me stares.
For me it happened in 3 stores :
- Rite Aid
- Target
- Old Navy
On coming back home, I picked up the suspect, my Sonoma jacket which I had bought from Kohls. Sure enough , there was a tag in there which said something like ‘Remove after purchase’ with a photo of scissors. I cut it off and ran a small experiment at the Rite Aid store and the Target store and the alarms no longer go off.
Sigh of relief !

The weird thing is that I bought the jacket from Kohl’s, Sonoma is a Kohl’s brand AFAIK but still this never set off the alarms at Kohl’s.
Edit : Some people mention that android phones such as Nexus can also set off these alarms at other stores like Macys, they blame it on the NFC feature, I cannot confirm this though.
