New by-Invite Orkut almost as bad as previous version

I was one of the (un?)lucky few to be invited to use the new Orkut and quite frankly its not that good. Google has used a lot of Ajax, tried to make it more facebooky but have failed miserably. The first thing where they fail is the gaudy and bright color scheme. The bright pink and blue color schemes dont match with the uncluttered look at all.

Plus the new Orkut is not even uncluttered, the huge advertisement on the right column has been shifted to the top and adblock no longer kills the whole element so there is a sick huge void in my Orkut window when I use Firefox. The huge ads are the biggest turnoff in the new Orkut.

The menus are less intuitive, took me 2 days to figure out how to use the communities section and get the latest post times from my various communities. Friend updates it seems are no longer optional, despite having them disabled in the old Orkut I am thrown this huge list of status updates from friends which tries to mimic Facebook but is very unfacebook at the same time especially with all the junk HTML Orkut seems to allow.

Orkut went down the day it allowed all the junk HTML and javascript coding. Compared to that facebook has a much better style and restricted media options and thats what makes it cleaner. Hope the Orkut devs are taking notes 🙂

The Orkut Tricolor is for Indians only

I was being told by my friends that Orkut has gone into the tricolor colours to celebrate India’s 60th Independence Day. They were happy that the world would know this, but would they ??

We decided to see if this India Stunt was truly global or just a localised gimmick. And as expected, it was a special thing only for traffic originating from India, with a view to attain Good PR from Indians ? Its a localised doodle to put it straight. As you can see when we accessed Orkut from a non-Indian IP, it showed us the normal page like it does to the Rest of the World.

Whats up with Orkut ?

Well Orkut just keeps getting more addictive doesnt it. The highly addictive social networking site just turned 3 recently and has launched a favourite videos section. Users can post the URLs to their favourite videos on youtube or google video and his/her friends will be able to see it. Not so surprisingly , Orkut , a google company has chosen not to allow MSN videos and other video sites to be used to add favourite videos.

I logged into my Orkut account after a lot of time and saw i had around 800 unread messages, whoa !!! , i open my inbox and see that 99% of messages are from people i dont know. Some sample scam emails include

** you are not gonna miss a chance to make $1000/day at home,the real wealth package***
My dear friend
This is the real way to make money online no doubt in that other sites tell you you can be millionaire like 1,2,3 it’s not like that but there are secrests to make a good income there>>
You can now start living your life the way you want! What does this mean… well for me it means not having to wake up to an alarm clock in the morning. All of the above messages were fully loaded with refferal messages , most of them for MyLOT , a new site on the block which pays you for uploading pictures , discussions etc. I decided to check the sites, the sites are full of garbage. Discussions range from topics with the mental level ‘is my pimple too’ red to ‘should i brush my teeth’.Moreover most users seem to have a mental level of a 3yr old asking stupid questions (dont know whether delibrate or not) , the bad thing is that they encourage people to scam others , dignified referral programs always have a no unsolicitated message policy which is highly put to use but none in this case.

Ghost Orkut Members

These are the people on Orkut with fake profiles merely to send such messages ,Here is the screenshot of the communities tab of one such hooligan , 964 communities , if Orkut doesnt know about it , you got to be kidding me , moreover i tried reporting some of them as bogus, all of those whom i reported still continued to exist till day even after 2 months. This means the report features of Orkut are mere eyewash. I remember the ‘I hate India’ community , everyone i knew had marked it as bogus. Around 2 lakh Indians atleast must have marked it as illegal , but the community ran for sooooooo many days , even now many such communities can be found on Orkut.

Our take is that if you want to earn money on the internet , do work , proper work , make a website , write content , but dont fall for these get rich quick things ,you will waste so much time and end up earning ZERO.

How to scrap on Orkut using Opera Mini

Opera mini it seems is everyone’s favourite , why shouldnt it be , the way it renders huge pages into a few kbs is ultracool. So many people had asked me how to scrap in Opera Mini on Orkut , the answer is simple (If you want to see how to login using Opera Mini onto Orkut , see our previous post
1. Just type what all you need to type in the field

2. Then type this javascript: submitForm(document.getElementById(‘b2′),’submit’);

Remove the space between : and s in the above command.

Similarly to know more such tricks , just see the javascript of the action you want to perform on Orkut and then you can use the same javascript URL on your mobile phone browser. This has to be done as Opera mini doesnt support javascript fully till now. Another good news for all you Opera mini fans is that Opera Mini 3 Beta has been released, keep looking at this column for a review !
