Bought the Iphone in India : You are crazy !
Sorry for calling you crazy, but there is no sane person in India who would buy an Iphone. I know a few friends(rich and a little ignorant about technology in general) who have bought the Iphone from America or asked their uncles to bring the Iphone to India during their next trip. Most of those who already have got the Iphone in India are banging their heads on the wall. Because even after weeks of its launch , they still cant make it work on Airtel or Hutch. The iPhone is just a paperweight or an iBrick as some people prefer to call it
Despite our warning in our previous post, one of the readers bought a phone, and wrote to me. He thanked me for the good advice and then used the choicest swear words for me saying i should have been more clear that he should not have bought an iPhone, so here i am being more clear, if you are an Indian living in India, dont buy the iPhone just yet.
Thats the truth about mobile phones and the Indian people. Most Indian teens watch Gadget Guru on NDTV and feel they are topshot techies. Well here is an eyeopener, Gadget Guru wont make you a techie, maybe a tech salesman. Sometimes i feel if i had the budget of NDTV and i was asked to make a show like Gadget Guru, how much i would do. A Tech show should cater to a tech audience not a general demographic as Gadget Guru does. Ok, enough of NDTV bashing.
Again i repeat, unless you have 20k rupees in spare, dont buy an iPhone in India
You can activate it using the cracks available on the net, and use it as a latest ipod , though not as a mobile
Yeah i know about those, but the fact remains, you wont be able to use all its features, if you need an iPhone for iPod only , why waste extra money ?
So, bought an iPhone and wasted your money on it?? here is another cool advise for all ya guys out there glued to their NDTV-ish screens: these shows look appealing because they have only one target in their mind and that is higher TRPs. Most of the stuff shown on Gadget guru is for the elite class junta which sometimes might think again before getting themselves such piece of technical jewellery… so to say. It doesn’t exactly make you a techy, it only makes you stand out of the crowd and that only for a short while. Moral: All that glitters may not be Gold.
I agree with the original post, but not completely. The iPhones which are being brought in India by what-so-ever means work absolutely fine initially. You will find the contacts, GPRS, music, etc everything working absolutely fine across all networks in Delhi (as for my knowledge); The only problem is and is definitely going to arise is that the first time you face a problem in the phone or it generally slows down or hangs and all – ideally you would connect it to your PC and go to the Apple website to download the latest firmware. THIS is where money becomes dust and the iPhone will become an ‘iBrick’.
Conclusion: You can use the phone as of now but eventually you WILL have to update or upgrade the software sometime. Once connected to the Internet, Apple’s server will note that you are sitting in India with an unauthorised piece and wallah! you behold a shiny brick in your hand.
FYI, The iPhone 4gb model is available for like $300 in the U.S but is being sold here by black & grey market merchants easily around 35k to 40k per piece.
U.S sales have stopped giving out contracts of the 4gb model totally by now and are marketing only the 8gb one.
these all comments are quite old…what are the latest reviews…say reviews of 2008…of course in india
Well, I got one from the US even before its launch in India. It may not have the features which many other phones have but it also has many features which other phones dont have, like multi touch screen, high quality large screen display, latest gen ipod, great user interface, god speed and 3rd party app support.
I could crack it myself on my own pc using ziphone and I have used it on idea, vodafone and spice networks without any hassel. I have not tried other networks and didnt bother to cos I am sure that it is network provider free now.
Its not a bad deal if u get it from US and crack and use it here. Also if you want to sell it, people are ready to grab it for 15K plus. To summarize it all ” Iphone rocks in its own way !”
So I feel its not correct on the reviewers part to call iphone users in India crazy. I am a techie myself and I am happy with my iphone!
@Techie – you might want to see the date of the article 🙂
